This is a paper presented by Dr. Javad Mashayekh (the head of international studies at TSI) at the 7th conference on international engineering of materials and Metallurgy(IMAT 2018); This international conference is one of the most important communities of experts and researchers of materials and metallurgy in the middle east. This paper was presented in the form of one of the three key panel lectures on the future of Metallurgical Industries, considering the past and future economic developments, on Tuesday October 9th, on the first day of the 7th International Conference on Materials and Metallurgy Engineering in Imam Khomeini Musalla. Other lecturers of this panel were; Dr. Tahmaseb Mazaheri (the former head of CBI), Ali Akbar Motahedi (faculty member of scientific and industrial researches and board member of Bahonar copper co.)

In addition to the ascending trend of per capita of materials in the world presented in this paper, its implications were discussed. Subsequently, by examining the opinions of various researchers about the relationship between sustainability and material use, alternative theories of absolute separation and relative separation were presented, then, the concept of flow of materials and indicators used in this field was introduced and examples of the use of material flow audit in sectoral and national policy documents in different countries were presented

This is while Iran that holds the fifth rank in accessibility to natural resources has not paid much attention to flow analysis and auditing at national level, and targets for policy documents are largely general and unmeasurable. It seems that, the concept of material flow auditing as an effective analytical tool should be of greater concern to micro and macro planners and policymakers in the country to lead to designing more effective and measurable policies to reduce national vulnerability, because different materials as one of the important inputs in economic and social systems play an important role in the development of a nation, and material flow auditing paves the way for identifying the bottlenecks
